buy a bargain...fix a feast?

better cookbooks for better cooking for better cooks. from better homes and gardens.

also from savers. 99 cents apiece was a pretty good bargain in my opinion.

bringing the total of vintage better homes and gardens cookbooks up to 8.

don't understand the appeal of the "fluffy fruit mold"...
who knows. maybe it's tasty after all. :D

hehe can I have a party like this sometime? everybody is required to dress like this too.

all the meals in this section were made with meat. "old-time favorites" apparently.

this is the first children's cookbook i've seen from this era.

very useful...but why the "food" store?

Vintage Cookbooks

Oh, the joys of thrifting. Vintage cookbooks for 3 dollars? Yay! This is the latest addition.

(copyright 1941)

And of course it's fun to see what people have handwritten inside, like in this one :
"To Jane,  for Bobby's benefit, with love to both - Marg."

When I was flipping through this on the way home, I came across a description for Norwegian Prune Pudding. (Actually, I think it must be a combination of Tapioca Cream and Norwegian Prune Pudding, seeing that there is actually not any tapioca in the Norwegian Pudding...) {Under the category 'Desserts Children Like'}

"Pieces of dark meaty prune, ready for the picking, float enticingly in creamy tapioca."

Somehow I don't think that this would be a well-loved dessert around our house...
Oh, and here's another rather strange recipe. (My Dad said to include this one.)

Braised Possum? No thanks.

But, there are many recipes that sound delicious. Fudge Cake, Gingerbread Upside-Down Cake, Blackberry Jam Cake, Kuchen, Hot Cross Buns, Potato Soup, etc. etc. etc....

Oh, and there's also Eel in Aspic. (not under the Delicious category!!!!!)

Pickles with Liam

Dill Pickles

Ingredients:

1 T dill

1 T salt

1 tsp mustard seed

3 medium sized cucumbers (or 10 small sized)

1 C vinegar

2 C water

1 clove garlic, peel and cut in half

6 whole black pepper corns

2 large empty jars

Wash the cucumbers and cut into slices or spears. Put cucumbers in a large bowl and sprinkle the salt and dill over them. Use your hands to mix them so they are all evenly coated. Let sit for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, put the cucumbers into two jars. Add 3 peppercorns and 1/2 tsp mustard seed to each jar. Using a garlic press, squeeze half a garlic clove into each jar.

Stir the water and vinegar together in a large measuring cup. Pour half into each jar. Screw lids on tightly and shake each jar to mix. Put pickles into the refrigerator and wait until the next day to eat them. They will last about 2 weeks in the fridge. YUM!

Jam on Biscuits, Jam on toast...

...Jam is the thing that I like most...

Recently, we went strawberry picking at a friend's garden. We picked two enamel bowlfuls. One was huge!
So anyway, we took the stems off and put them all on a cookie sheet. Then a little bit of sugar was sprinkled over the berries. Into the freezer they went. I think they will go into freezer bags soon!

With the overripe berries, we made freezer jam. Freezer jam is really nice because you don't have to cook the fruit. You just mash four cups of fruit, add sugar, and some pectin. (The pectin makes the jam not so liquid.) Then they go in the fridge or the freezer. Mom won't let us eat it yet though. She says we have to finish the store-bought jelly first. Which is going to take a while, because it's a Costco-sized jar. Oh well.

...Blackberry, Strawberry, Raspberry, I'm very,

...FOND OF JAM!
